Abstract

The recurring difficulties faced by students in understanding the course Discrete Mathematics II served as the primary motivation for conducting this study. The purpose of this research is to examine how the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model can enhance students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in the course. The subjects of this study were fourth-semester students from Class F of the Informatics Engineering Education Study Program at STKIP Al Maksum. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, using problem-solving test items and observation sheets for both lecturer and student activities as data collection instruments. The results revealed that the PBL model effectively improved students’ mathematical problem-solving skills in Discrete Mathematics. There was a noticeable increase in the average score from 63.2 in the first cycle to 73.6 in the second cycle. Moreover, the overall learning process in the second cycle showed better development compared to the previous cycle. Therefore, it can be concluded that the PBL model contributes positively to improving both the learning process and students’ problem-solving abilities in mathematics.
